Samuel T. Davis papers, 1861-1862.

General description of the collection: The Samuel T. Davis papers consist of a journal which Davis kept from 18 October 1961 to 22 October 1962 and an undated transcription of the journal. Davis's narrative follows the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on its trek from Pittsburgh, PA to Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and back to Louisville, KY. It contains details of the unit's daily marches and mentions the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Chaplin Hills, and problems with bushwhackers and the Texas Rangers.

Captain (CPT) Samuel T. Davis was born in 1838. He was a member of the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and served in the United States Army during the Civil War.
